about

Instrumental quintet The Gene Drayton Unit have been setting London stages alight during 2001 and are set to release their first record in January 2002, a three-track single on Butterfly Records out of Barcelona.
Take equal parts of jazz, soul, and vintage R&B, add a twist of 60s punk and stir it all up with a Leslie cabinet and you are getting close to the GDU sound. Asking the boys for their influences is starting a real long conversation, since they are all music fanatics with immense record collections. The obvious ones such as Stax Records, Junior Walker and Jack McDuff will crop up straight away, but you are just as likely to hear mentions of Thelonious Monk, Iggy Pop, Television and Captain Beefheart. But ultimately it's the heartfelt sound of the cellar, of the dancefloor and of rhythm and soul that comes through when you hear the GDU play.
The Gene Drayton Unit are key UK members of the current "Hammond band" scene along with The New Mastersounds, the ubiquitous James Taylor Quartet (JTQ) and well-travelled US outfits The Nick Rossi Set from San Francisco and New York's Sugarman 3. But the GDU have eschewed the current trend for funk and are instead firmly rooted in the earthy R&B sound of the mid-1960s. For want of a better term, some call it "Mod Jazz", but it's really just top-notch music.

The tracklisting of The Gene Drayton Unit single is:
ORDINARY TWIST - self penned R&B stepper. Hi heel sneakers recommended.
THE WHOLE HOG - the GDU go South with this Prestige style groover.
STEPPIN' STONE - flute-led version of the Monkees classic, and all jangly guitars, swirling Hammond and polo necks.
The single was cut live in the studio at the UK's only vintage analog studio, Toe Rag, and was engineered by Mr Liam Watson, himself a leading light in the UK retro scene
